Working with Premier Chris Minns, we are committed to making renting fairer and more secure so families can feel comfortable in their own homes and not only build a great life but get ahead.
Our rental reforms are already making a real difference, including:
- Limiting rental increases to once per year, stopping the practice of excessive rent increases squeezing people out of their homes.
- Banning no-grounds evictions: Landlords must now provide reasonable grounds to end a lease, and a reason to end a tenancy for both periodic and fixed-term leases.
- Fee-free rent payments, ending the practice of additional fees and charges just to pay your rent.
- Introducing a Portable bonds scheme to reduce the financial impact of having to move by allowing you to transfer your bond digitally to your new home.
- Banning Rent Bidding by prohibiting real estate agents asking for a higher rent than the advertised price.
We’re committed to making renting more transparent and protecting the rights of renters by:
- Establishing the NSW Rental Commissioner to advocate on behalf of renters and provide oversight of dispute resolution, prosecutions and compliance.
- Creating the NSW Rental Taskforce to hold dodgy real estate agents to account, that has already recovered and returner more than $166,000 in unlawful fees to renters.
- Delivering Rent-Check a simple, online, free way to compare and check the median rent in your community.
- Protecting renters’ privacy by making it clear what personal information can and can’t be collected by real estate agents.
- Mandatory disclosure of digitally modified images in rental advertisements. To stop images being altered to cover up faults or make spaces look bigger.
I know there’s still more to do, and we’ll keep working to strengthen and protect renters’ rights.
